President’s Message – Q4 2016
‘Tis the Season for Giving Thanks and Giving Back
Reflecting back on 2016, I am proud to report that it was another record year for Annex across key performance indicators such as annual revenue, projects, consultants and clients. Thanks very much to our clients and consultants for the opportunities to work together. As much as we like to think that we are a pretty great company, we cannot expect you, our clients and consultants, to love us unconditionally. We’ve got to earn it. Thanks also to our suppliers for your support. Finally, a big thanks from me to Annex’s staff, the best team in the business.
At Annex, our purpose is to make connections that change lives. We have the opportunity to change the lives of our consultants, our clients, and our clients’ end customers who benefit from all the great work being done. Having said that, we can always do more. We can also change lives by giving back to our local community, and this is the time of year to think of others who are less fortunate.
Annex Helps is the name of our corporate social responsibility program. “Giving back” is a personal core value of mine and it is important to me that Annex has actively contributed to the community since its inception in 1998. There are three pillars of the Annex Helps program: community involvement, services and financial support.
Annex staff are encouraged to volunteer time in the local community. If they do so with an organization relevant to Annex (e.g., an IT industry association), then their volunteer time counts as work time. In other words, Annex pays our staff to volunteer to support the community. For example, I am on the Board of Directors for Project Management Volunteers (PMV), a wonderful group that matches up volunteer project managers with small, local not-for-profit organizations.
Our team is also encouraged to volunteer time with other charitable organizations. For example, last week 13 of our team members spent an evening volunteering their time at A Loving Spoonful, a 27-year old charity that provides food to people living with HIV/AIDS. Other examples of organizations we have volunteered at include Agile Vancouver, BCTA, CIPS, IIBA, HRMA, ISS of BC, MOSAIC, PMI, SUCCESS, SFU, Society of PMPs of Greater Vancouver, Union Gospel Mission and UBC.
Annex provides discounted and pro bono services to small not-for-profit organizations in the community that cannot afford our regular services. Examples of organizations we have assisted include Canadian Red Cross, EMBERS, Fair Trade Vancouver, Gather and Give, H.R. Macmillan Space Centre, Stroke Recovery Association of BC, The Vancouver Community Television Association, United Way of the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Foundation, and Vantage Point.
Each fiscal year, Annex’s staff nominates and selects three charities that the company will financially support. This year, our charities are:
- Big Sisters
- Alzheimer Society of Canada
- Kids Up Front
Throughout the year we organize fundraisers and contests to raise money for these charities and at year-end Annex tops up our total donation. Other organizations we have financially supported over the years include ALS Canada, BC Cancer Foundation, BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, Children of the Street Society, Greater Vancouver Food Bank, Immigrant Services Society of British Columbia, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada, Meningitis Research Foundation of Canada, Nourish Charitable Foundation Society, ShelterBox, True Patriot Love Foundation, and World Partnership Walk.
The Power of Contribution
Annex’s donations of time, leadership, services and money obviously benefit the organizations we are helping as well as the people receiving help from those organizations. But over the years we have discovered an additional bonus – giving back makes *us* feel great. So don’t just give back this holiday season to help others, do it to make you happy.
Thanks again to all for a great 2016, and best wishes for 2017.
