President’s Message – Q3/2018
Creating the Next Generation of IT Professionals
As the CEO of an IT recruitment and solutions company, I am very familiar with the current shortage of IT professionals. As I have written about before, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) predicts a shortage of 216,000 IT professionals in Canada by 2021. I already support the IT industry with donations of time, leadership and expertise, but I want to do more.
To help develop the next generation of emerging IT talent, Annex intends to create an endowment scholarship program as part of Annex Helps, our corporate social responsibility program. An endowment scholarship creates a permanent fund by making initial and ongoing contributions to ensure the scholarship retains its value in perpetuity. Scholarships are funded using the income generated by the endowment. We will provide at least one scholarship each year to a deserving student at one of Annex’s university partners. This has been one of my personal bucket list goals for a long time. Annex is doing well, so why wait?
According to Heritage Education Funds, the average Canadian 4-year tuition will cost over $152,000 including expenses by 2035. I graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Science in Computing Science. I came from a modest income family so it was my responsibility to pay for my university education. I was lucky enough to do that with scholarships and co-op work terms at amazing organizations across Canada. I want to pay it forward and help others in the same way that scholarships helped me.
As many of you know, I am an advocate for the tech industry and regularly do presentations to universities, colleges, high schools and elementary schools to encourage young people, especially young women and girls, to consider careers in technology. I am excited to take my advocacy to the next level. At Annex, our purpose is to make connections that change lives so I am incredibly excited to work closely with deserving Computer Science students and help them start a journey that will forever change their lives.
If you wish to help, you can also donate to the scholarship fund and receive a tax receipt. The larger we grow the endowment fund, the more young IT professionals we can help. I am sincerely grateful to anyone who decides to support the cause and 100% of donations will go toward the scholarship fund. Scholarships will be awarded to students who meet the following criteria: in financial need, have good grades, and give back to the community.
Stay tuned over the next 12 months for more details on the Annex scholarship program!
